The New Jersey Attorney General's Office, Division on Civil Rights, is looking for part-time Mediator to join its Alternative Dispute Resolution Unit. The position can be based in Trenton, Cherry Hill, Newark, or Atlantic City, NJ - applicants must indicate their location preference when applying. The hourly rate for this position will fall within the $43.37 to $61.75 per hour range. Please note, hourly employees may not exceed 944 work hours in a fiscal year (7/1 through 6/30). Hourly positions are worked during normal business hours.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.
ABOUT THE DIVISION:
The N.J. Division on Civil Rights (DCR) is charged with enforcing the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD), New Jersey Family Leave Act (FLA), and Fair Chance in Housing Act (FCHA) and preventing and eliminating discrimination and bias-based harassment in New Jersey. The Policy Unit drafts guidance documents and regulations, drafts and advises on legislation, and issues policy reports on issues impacting the civil rights of NJ residents.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under the direction of the Director, Deputy Director and the Lead Mediator, the mediator will:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
OTHER KEY FACTORS:
o A J.D.;
o Five (5) five years of full-time experience out of law school: have attended mediation training and have substantial volunteer and/or paid mediation experience;
o Possess experience with the laws enforced by DCR and/or federal and state civil rights laws, and a commitment to a New Jersey free of discrimination;
o Demonstrates an ability to successfully mediate cases involving complex and interrelated issues and/or an unusual degree of intractability on the part of one or more parties
o Exceptional writing skills; and Experience analyzing complex policy and legal problems and recommending and implementing effective solutions.
